appearance
Standing at 179 cm (5'9") with a weight of 54 kg (119 lbs), Light's body has been toned to perfection, a build worthy of a king who has the time to devote to his health and well-being. He has kept himself in shape but his is not the body of a warrior. Long arms and limbs are strong but not bulky. In fact, there is nothing about him that is particularly exceptional. No one feature stands out, and perhaps it is intentional. His face is delicately chiseled, average Japanese features which somehow look more refined on him. His skin is fair and flawless. His nose is slightly pointed and his lips are unremarkable when they hold no expression. His almond-shaped eyes are a deep brown and take on a reddish hue in the correct lighting. His short russet hair is always neatly trimmed and combed, brushed forward in an entirely average yet stylish manner. He carries himself with an air befitting of royalty, with impeccable posture and a dancer's grace. Every single bit of him is painstakingly groomed, and the result is that he looks utterly normal at a glance and incredibly beautiful upon closer inspection.

personality
When Light is at his best, he is a magnanimous leader capable of mastering his emotions and calmly examining a problem from all logical angles. He is courageous when it comes to his ideals, willing to put himself in serious jeopardy in order to achieve his vision and have a lasting influence on the world. He has the makings of a true hero, the kind of man who goes down in history as a legend. Self-assertive, self-confident, and strong, he will stand up for what he needs and wants. He believes he can do anything and has a passionate inner drive.

Because he is decisive and authoritative, others naturally look up to him. He takes the initiative and others are inspired to follow him, and it is extremely important to him that he has followers. His pride makes him want to impose his will and vision on everything around him. As a narcissist, Light does not see anyone else as an equal, because he does not believe any other can be as wise or as just as he is. His word is law and he is extremely forceful and dominating. He can be highly combative and intimidating to get his way, often confrontational and belligerent. Everything a test of wills and he will not back down from a challenge. He is very accustomed to threatening others until they submit to him.

When he feels endangered, he will defy any attempt to control him, becoming completely ruthless and dictatorial. Living as a god-king, he has delusional ideas about his power. At times he acts as if he is invincible. Light is a megalomaniac who believes that there is nothing in the world capable of stopping him. He is heartless and he believes he is invulnerable. He would rather die than surrender to another, would rather destroy the world than let anyone else rule it. His methods are brutal. If he does not view a person as worthy of life, he has no qualms about destroying that life. This murderous nature, however, is buried beneath the facade of the calm, intelligent hero, and rarely does it surface in the presence of others.

strengths
Light is a genius. Ever since he was a child, he has been the most brilliant and the best in whatever task he sets himself to. He has proven himself to be capable of outsmarting even the world's most intelligent authorities. His strategic skills are second to none. He is always ten steps ahead in the chess game of life, predicting the actions of everyone around him and positioning himself to react appropriately. Because he has such a deep understanding of the motivations of others, he is extremely manipulative. He can change himself completely to fit the situation in order to draw people to him and get what he wants from them. Not only is he gifted in terms of academia and social gravitas, he is also a logical problem-solver, which makes itself apparent in skills which range from computer hacking to running an efficient society. Light also happens to be a skilled athlete, especially in tennis.

weaknesses
Light's downfall is his pride. He cannot let anything go, cannot give in to another's wishes, and always must stand triumphant in the end. He plays games and drops hints which make situations unnecessarily dangerous for him, just for the sake of satisfying his ego. He is childishly competitive and does not know when to back down. He can also be extremely emotional and when things aren't going according to plan he comes very close to losing his mind, putting everything that he has worked for at risk. He is extremely vulnerable when his temper flares up and breaks through his carefully crafted mask, exposing him as the monster that he is. His mind is never at ease, even when things are going well, because he lives in a state of constant paranoia. He trusts absolutely no one and is always looking out for ulterior motives. Because he is only capable of relying on himself, he leads a surprisingly lonely, isolated existence.

abilities
Without his Death Note, Light has no supernatural abilities.

canon history
Light Yagami was born on February 28, 1986, to Chief Detective Soichiro Yagami and his wife Sachiko, in Tokyo, Japan. Growing up in an upper middle class household with parents who pampered him and eventually a little sister, Sayu, who adored him, Light's was a privileged childhood. When he entered school, it became immediately apparent that he was a prodigy. He rose to the top of his class with no effort at all. And if good looks and extremely high intelligence weren't enough, Light was also a star athlete as a junior high school tennis champion in 1999 and 2000. Once he was accepted to Daikoku Private Academy, he gave up tennis and spent his evenings attending supplemental lessons at Gamou Prep Academy.

In his third and final year of high school, immensely bored with his mundane life, Light discovered a black notebook on the ground outside his classroom. Labeled "Death Note", the book contained a set of rules written in English which explained how to use the notebook, the first of which was: The human whose name is written in this note shall die. Being a logical young man who was not prone to superstition, Light laughed it off as a prank but found himself unable to resist giving it a try anyhow. After a few experiments on criminals to assure himself that the deaths were not coincidental, Light came to accept that the notebook was, in fact, capable of taking lives. Initially horrified by the idea that he had committed murder, Light quickly reassured himself that he could use this tool to remove filth from the world. Not only that he could, but that he must, because he was the only one smart enough and virtuous enough to use the Death Note for good.

Days later, a shinigami named Ryuk appeared before Light, claiming that the notebook once belonged to him. At first Light feared that the shinigami had come to take his soul, but Ryuk assured him that the only thing he wanted was entertainment... and apples. As the death god haunting the notebook, he would follow Light until either the notebook was passed on to another human or until Light's death. Ryuk made it clear that he was in no way Light's ally, and that eventually he would be the one to write Light's name in his own notebook. Light, however, was not concerned. He came to find his own ways of convincing the shinigami to do as he ordered, entirely unafraid of the monster who proved to be a wonderful audience as he executed his plan to rid the world of evil.

The world began to take notice as criminals in every nation died of heart attacks. In prisons, in their homes, and in the middle of committing evil acts, their deaths baffled investigators, who could not imagine how anyone could have laid a hand on them. Theories began to circulate about widespread vigilante organizations, but the general population began to view the phenomenon as an act of god. The internet dubbed this holy killer "Kira" and thousands of websites began to appear, praising Kira's actions and providing further information to assist in the destruction of the world's criminals.

Interpol, however, viewed Kira as a criminal like any other, and a meeting was called to determine what should be done about such a mysterious killer. The world-famous detective known only as "L" was brought onto the case and immediately set up a trap to get Kira to reveal his location. A supposed "world-wide" broadcast was aired in the Kanto region of Japan, in which a man named Lind L. Tailor revealed himself to be L and challenged Kira. Light, laughing at the detective's stupidity, wrote Tailor's name in the notebook. 40 seconds later, the decoy was dead and the real L addressed Kira to invite the "god" to kill him. Because Light did not know L's true name or face, it was impossible. L won the battle, and the war was on.

Japan's National Police Agency formed the Kira task force, led by Soichiro Yagami, with the objective of hunting down Kira. L allied himself with the task force and together they worked to uncover more clues about Kira's identity. Light remained one step ahead of them, able to read all of the information they gathered by hacking into his father's computer at home. L realized that there was a leak and arranged for FBI agents to engage in surveillance of task force members' families. An agent named Raye Penbar was assigned to Light, and Light was able to trick him into revealing not only his own name, but the names of all the other agents in Japan. After he executed them, the task force was narrowed down to six members. L trusted them enough to meet in person, revealing his face for the first time in history.

Meanwhile, Light managed to evade capture when Penbar's fiancee, Naomi Misora, happened to run into him on the way to speak to the task force. She was eliminated before she could reveal to L that Kira was capable of killing in ways other than heart attacks, a clue which would have led L straight to Light. Shortly after that, L arranged for cameras and bugs to be placed in the Yagami home. Through some clever and careful tricks, Light managed to continue judging criminals right under L's nose. Although at this point L heavily suspected that the genius son of the police chief was Kira, his attempts to turn up proof of this were continuously foiled.

In the spring of 2004, Light entered To-Oh University. He was one of two freshman representatives, the other a strange boy named Hideki Ryuga. At the entrance ceremonies, Ryuga revealed to Light that he was L, and invited Light to join the investigation team. Light was privately infuriated, because if Ryuga really was L, it would now be impossible to kill him since the other team members would know that Light was responsible. However, he eventually agreed to help L.

A second Kira appeared soon after, sending tapes to Sakura TV which praised Kira and begged for a meeting between the two. Through some clever trickery of her own, Misa Amane was able to track down the first Kira and ended up at Light Yagami's doorstep. Although at first he wanted to eliminate her, Light realized that she could be useful because of her shinigami eyes, and agreed to be her boyfriend. Before he could use her to find out L's real name, however, she was arrested.

Cornered, Light was left with no choice but to turn himself in. Arranging for his notebook to be given to the most greedy person possible, he then told L that he feared he was acting as Kira unconsciously and asked to be imprisoned so that they could ascertain whether it was true. While jailed, he discarded his ownership of the notebook, which erased all of his memories of being Kira. When criminals began to die again, L was forced to admit that Light was probably innocent, and both he and Misa were released from their cells, although kept under heavy surveillance in L's facility. L also insisted on handcuffing himself to Light and for the next several months they hunted Kira together as best friends and comrades.

The hunt eventually led them to a businessman named Kyosuke Higuchi who had been using the Death Note for the profit of the Yotsuba Corporation. At the site of the arrest, the notebook came into L's hands. L, distracted by the appearance of the notebook and its shinigami, did not notice when Light took the notebook from him. Light screamed as a rush of memories came pouring into him. Now remembering that he was Kira, he carried out the final steps of his plan by killing Higuchi secretly while sitting right beside L, which passed the ownership of the notebook back to him.

Back at headquarters, examination of the notebook revealed that one of the rules was If the person using the note fails to write the names of people to be killed within 13 days of each other, then the user will die. This fake rule, which Light had arranged for Ryuk to write, forced L to clear both Misa and Light's names, for they had been imprisoned for far longer than 13 days. Unfortunately, L wanted to test the rule himself, which forced Misa's shinigami, Rem, to kill him and his assistant Watari. Rem then died as a result of lengthening Misa's life.

Everything went according to Light's plan.

deviation
Minutes after L's death, the other members of the task force, including Light's own father, collapsed and died of heart failure. Light walked through the empty halls of the investigation headquarters, giddy with excitement over his victory and babbling to Ryuk about his plans to construct a beautiful, peaceful society from the ashes of the old. The bodies of his comrades, sacrifices for the sake of a better world, were left to rot around him while he formulated his next plans. He knew that he and Misa had to disappear until the world was ready for Kira to step forward as its ruler. He gathered all of the information and supplies that he required, rigged the headquarters with explosives, and demolished the building in an inferno that buried everything and everyone in it, including "Light Yagami".

Although Watari erased all of L's data as he was dying, he was too well-known himself to avoid Light's notice. Light knew that the link to L's past was Watari, also known as Quillsh Wammy, the famous inventor. If there remained any threat to Light's ambitions, it would be through that connection. Wammy was the founder of numerous orphanages around the world, and Light suspected that L had once been a child at one of these orphanages. Knowing that L had lived in England for some time, he focused on the Winchester orphanage first.

Assuming the name of Tsuki Asahi, Light traveled to the UK immediately. With Misa at his side, they walked the halls of Wammy's House writing the names of everyone they encountered. Roger, the caretaker, and all of L's successors died that day of a mysterious illness which baffled local authorities and was soon forgotten.

Back in Tokyo, Light and Misa married and moved into a one-room apartment together, where Light continued L's work. With L's network of connections around the world, it was easier than ever to discover the identities of criminals in order to eliminate them. Dictatorships crumbled, corruption ceased, and war became a thing of the past. By 2012, Kiraism was the world's most widespread religion. Eventually, even the world's leaders began to convert.

In 2015, Light Yagami finally stepped forward as Kira, ordering the Diet to pass the rule of the country to him so that he could ensure peace and stability for all of Japan. Fearing for their lives, they obediently elected him Prime Minister, then promoted him to Emperor, a role which once again became synonymous with God. Misa became the Empress, and Light selected his most faithful and outspoken followers, Teru Mikami and Kiyomi Takada, to serve as his High Priest and Priestess. They preached the teachings of Kira and urged other nations to bow to his will.

It took surprisingly little to convince them. Before the age of 30, Light ruled the world.
